Bratislava is a city extremely rich with history and lucky for visitors the past is preserved in the city's many museums. There are so many museums and places of interest you will most likely not have nearly enough time to visit them all. But, take a look at some of the offerings and decide on your favourites. Please note that most museums are closed on Mondays. If not mentioned below then the opening hours are from 9 am till 5 pm Tue – Fri.
The Slovak National Museum (Slovenské národné múzeum)
Was founded in 1961, has its headquarters in Bratislava on the riverfront in the Old Town, along with the Natural History Museum, which is one of its subdivisions. The SNM manages 16 specialized museums both in and outside Bratislava. Some of them are listed below:
- Natural History Museum located right on the Danube river bank on Vajanskeho nabrezie 2.
- Archaeological Museum and Museum of History (Bratislava Castle)
- Červený Kameň Museum (Červený Kameň Castle)
- Museum of Jewish Culture next to the tram tunnel on Zidovska 17
The Bratislava City Museum
Its headquarters are located in the Old Town Hall, near the Main Square. The museum documents the history of Bratislava from the earliest periods until the 20th century. The Bratislava City Museum is the oldest museum in continuous operation in Slovakia. The Bratislava City Museum manages eight specialized museums. Soem of them are listed below:
- Museum of the City History: main museum, which displays archaeological discoveries and findings and documents a history of pharmacy, culture, social life and numismatics
- Museum of Arms and City Fortifications in the tower above Michael's Gate
- Museum of Clocks, housed at the House of the Good Shepherd on Zidovska street
- Devín Castle National Cultural Monument in Devín
- Gerulata National Cultural Monument in Rusovce.
The Museum of Transportation is situated on the site of the first steam-railway station in Bratislava on Šancová Street, near the current main railway station. It was opened on June 24, 1999.
